Wheelchair Mount for iPAD

Postby mommygrove » Thu May 13, 2010 7:20 pm

We are getting an iPAD for my 5 year old daughter with severe CP so we can use Proloquo2go. Does anyone know of a way to attach the iPAD securely to her wheelchair or wheelchair tray?

looks good but how would you secure it to the chair frame or tray for when chair was moving?

RJ Cooper makes mounts for wheelchairs hes based in Australia, not sure what country you are in but you could take a pic of one of his and see if a company who makes mounts for other communication aids would make one for you?

If you are in UK, 'Mounts & More' do a variety of mounts you'd need some kind of metal plate thing fixing to back of iPad for mount to fit
to.

These are expensive though. If she has one of those clear trays you could try sticky back velcro putting some on the tray and some on the back of a case.

I use a Trabasack bag/tray with velcro surface so things can be stuck on it if they have velcro on the back, I bought the Apple case that slopes towards you when in landscape mode, so I'm planning on sticking some velcro to inside of it so I can stick it to the tray. I didnt realise when I bought case that there no screen protector, as I thought for some reason you slid the iPad into a sleeve with the screen protector on top, but looking at a review it appears there isn't one, so you might want to put a screen protector on so the velcro doesn't scratch the screen when the case is closed.

I haven't seen another case though that slopes the iPad like that to make it easier for typing on and in good position for using with P2G on your lap or wheelchair tray.

Just a correction about RJCooper.
He is American and based in California.
His things are nice and tend to be less expensive than some of the competitors. I have one of his device mounts (from the page in the link) and it is very nice and holds the device securely.

Many of the wheelchair mounts are made to hold a device that is 4-5 pounds (or even more) because typical communication devices weigh that much. Because the iPad is so much lighter, you may be able to use a switch mount instead - those are generally less expensive.

I bet your daughter was thrilled to have an iPad on her wheelchair accessible vehicles. This would really help her enjoy learning. With regards to mounting it, if you can't use ordinary straps you can find in DiY stores, you can consider ordering special wheelchairs designed for her needs. There are several stores who can do the transaction online.

You may want to look at RAM Mounts http://www.gpscity.com/tablet-mount/apple/ipad for mounting the iPad to a wheelchair.
